About Me
My wife Shelly and I bought our first station in 1993. Up to that time we had worked in a family Automotive Repair Business --specializing in Automatic Transmissions. We thought it would be a good part-time business --boy were we fooled. Since our first station we have built, purchased, moved, and sold other stations. We now operate six commercial FM Stations, one non-com, and two translators in Southeast Missouri. We both work at the stations -- we have worked together our entire married life except for two years. We got back into the transmission business in 1998 and are still partners in that venture. We also own and live on a farm where we raise South Poll cattle (breed developed by Teddy Gentry of the band Alabama), hair sheep, miniature donkeys, and Scottish Highlander Cattle. In 2015 Westwood One made the decision to drop the SAM format and switch all SAM stations to Jack. We decided that wasn't what we preferred to do -- so another company came to be -- Airvoyent. SAM is still alive on our station and a couple others through Airvoyent. Same programmer, same voice, all MOHD now, and a wider variety is the SAM of today. (and possibly available in your market). Air Force/Storq wasn't mentioned as an Automation System but if you are still using any of these systems I can help you with them. Our last venture is rental homes -- our niche has become retirees looking to move back where they grew up and no longer wanting the responsibility of ownership. We currently manage 40 homes with more on the drawing board.
Shelly and I were High School sweethearts and will be celebrating our 40th anniversary in 2022. We have two great boys (Steve and Chris) which are both pharmacists in St Louis. Chris is married (Sarah -- also a pharmacist) and they had their first child this year (our first grandchild) Otto.
I am the current President of the Poplar Bluff Rotary Club and on the board of the Historic Rodgers Theatre. Shelly and I both are involved with the Wayne County Cattlemens Association
Radio has been very good to us. We thoroughly enjoy it and as we all know RADIO WORKS! I imagine you can guess how we promote our other business' we are involved with.
My Market
All of the stations are located in Southeast Missouri -- some serving the "Bootheel" and others serving the eastern Ozarks. All operations are now out of our Poplar Bluff location and licensed to the following towns -- Poplar Bluff, Doniphan, Campbell, Grandin, and Kennett. The largest town is Poplar Bluff with a population of around 17,000 and Butler County having around 40,000. It is the main shopping hub and healthcare center. We do have several factories in our industrial park and ag is also big in the area. You will find all the usual chain stores plus a fairly healthy local business scene.
